Aratas Receives Its First NISSAN Global Innovation Award
Recognized for Enhancing Nissan’s Product Competitiveness and Brand Value
Aratas Corporation (Head Office: Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto; President and CEO: Masahiko Ezaki; hereafter “Aratas”) has received the Global Innovation Award from Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (“Nissan”) as part of its 2026 NISSAN Global Innovation & Quality Award.
The award, presented annually, recognizes suppliers for their contributions to making Nissan’s products more competitive and strengthening its brand. As a strategic partner of Nissan, Aratas jointly developed a 3D holographic rear combination lamp featured on selected grades of the third-generation all-electric Nissan LEAF. The lamp’s distinctive 3D holographic display is made possible by Aratas’ proprietary spatial projection technology.
Aratas developed the technology through years of research in optics. By combining its expertise in light-control design and microfabrication, the technology can display three-dimensional images despite its simple structure consisting of a transparent resin light guide plate and LEDs. The light guide plate adopted for the Nissan LEAF is only 2 mm thick, yet creates the appearance of approximately 40 mm of depth.*
*Technically, the system can create a total visual depth of 60 mm: 40 mm behind the light guide plate and 20 mm in front of it.
The technology has previously been used mainly in amusement equipment, but made its automotive debut in the Nissan LEAF. As the automotive industry increasingly seeks smaller, lighter and more resource-efficient components, Aratas believes the technology can make a broad contribution by delivering three-dimensional visual effects in limited spaces while maintaining a simple structure. Building on the technology’s adoption in the Nissan LEAF and this award, Aratas plans to expand its use beyond rear lamps to a wide range of automotive components.
This award highlights Aratas’ contribution to Nissan’s new product development and to addressing challenges facing the automotive components industry. This initiative embodies Aratas’ mission: “We harness innovative connections between people and technology to create a new tomorrow.” Guided by this mission, Aratas will continue to pioneer innovative technologies and proactively propose solutions to social challenges.
By further advancing its spatial projection technology and working closely with customers to address the evolving challenges facing the automotive industry, Aratas aims to continue delivering solutions that maximize customer value.
